Wish me luck! This will be a very interesting ride.
Have you heard of those daily painting challenges? It was started by Duane Keiser in 2004. The daily painting movement or “painting a day concept” is the practice of creating a painting a day during a certain time period.
Over the years, I have not paid much attention to these painting a day challenges because it did not suit my style of painting. It also seemed a tad overwhelming and I didn’t think I would feel inspired to paint EVERYDAY.
As I continue down my path of improving my painting skills, I decided to combine my interest in learning how to paint "the Light" with this challenge. I am sure some of the paintings will be duds but here is my plan....
Short, thick strokes of paint quickly capturing the essence of the subject, rather than its details.
Colours are applied side-by-side with as little mixing as possible, a technique that exploits the principle of simultaneous contrast to make the colour appear more vivid to the viewer.
The play of natural light is emphasized. Close attention is paid to the reflection of colours from object to object.
Let me be clear here… when in Mexico I want to fish, play and hang out. Trust me when I tell you that I will find plenty of distractions from painting. So taking on a challenge such as this might seriously cramp my style. There will most definitely be days when it will come down to a choice between playing and painting. I think I am up to the task. But it IS daunting, I have to admit.
Each day I will post a picture and a wee blurb to keep you entertained. So come back on Feb 4th (and the next day and the day after that) to witness the beginnings of this exciting and somewhat terrifying process. And because I know you are wondering…yes, they are all for sale.
